This month, we're looking at:
SUBMIT YOUR WORK TO US
The history of mankind is filled with tragedy and genocide. Whilst the remembering of past events can certainly be sad and tough to face, or valuable -at least to those there to listen, grieve or be forgiven, can lessons truly be learned from these occasions? Does facing the past en-masse move us forward, and if so, what can be shown for it?
The Germans refer to this state of reflection as Vergangenheitsbewältigung, or “coming to terms with the past,” a term born from the politics and culture of a guilt-ridden post-war Germany. But its meaning can be applied beyond the Nazis, and other international conflicts.
The Rational’s June Issue, Coming to Terms, forces us to face ourselves, as well as our history, and seeks an answer to the much coveted question: Is it possible to accept the ugliness of the past and genuinely move forward?
